The Mini -Facelift & -Tummy Tuck

If you want to find out more about the traditional facelift surgery at my practice, make sure to visit my website

If you are looking to improve descended cheeks or a sagging jaw line, without resorting to a traditional facelift, a mini facelift may be the answer for you!

The mini facelift works well in younger patients who do not have substantial aging of their neck. It should actually be called a “monmal access” facelift, because I do the surgery through shorter scars.

Since it is a ‘mini’ procedure, the surgery and recovery times are significantly reduced as compared to a traditional facelift.

Of course, when it comes to plastic surgery, it is important to know exactly what you’re in for and whether or not you would be a good candidate.

→Who is a good candidate for mini facelift?

  • Men and women with moderate degrees of facial aging
  • Younger patients who want to maintain their youthful looks by undergoing a smaller procedure at an earlier age
  • older patients who have signs of facial/neck aging but are not overly concerned about the appearance of their neck
  • Patients who have lost substantial weight and find that their facial skin is sagging

Ideally, patients that have minimal neck sagging, or patients who are not concerned about their neck, are best suited for the mini facelift procedure but if you are concerned about your neck area, I will explain to you how I can help with other surgical and non-surgical procedures during your consultation.  However a minifacelift does improve the neck to a limited degree.

During your consultation I will explain exactly what you can expect from a mini facelift. Phone my rooms on 012 993 0566 to book your appointment!

→What does a mini facelift accomplish?

Here is how I describe the mini facelift: if you look in the mirror and prop up your cheeks and jowls with your fingers, you are mimicking what a mini facelift accomplishes.

Specifically, the mini facelift:

  • elevates the jowls (for a clean, sleek jawline)
  • elevates descended cheek fat (for a healthy, youthful fullness)
  • the folds in the corners of the mouth (marionette lines) and smile lines (nasolabial folds) are made smoother

In contrast to a regular facelift, a mini facelift does not directly address the neck. Of course, I also offer the traditional facelift at my Pretoria practice.

→Recovery after the Mini Facelift

The mini facelift can be done as a day case. You will be allowed to go home following surgery, after the effects of anaesthesia have worn off, accompanied by a friend or family member.

Once at home, you should rest and relax as much as possible. You may do non-strenuous activities such as watching television, and making meals. Keeping your head elevated decreases facial swelling, allowing the healing process to proceed more quickly.

Pain after a mini facelift is typically mild. Medication for discomfort will be prescribed, and can be used during this time. You may have bruising in the first 1-2 weeks.

The majority of patients return to (non-strenuous) work after 7-10 days.

You will have an appointment with me 1-2 days after your mini facelift and your dressing will be removed. And one week post-surgery, I will remove the stitches.

You will be allowed to start light exercise (e.g. walking) 1-2 weeks after your surgery. I also strongly recommend you avoid strenuous activity until 4-6 weeks after surgery.

The Mini Tummy Tuck

Now let’s talk about another very popular mini procedure: the mini tummy tuck! Did you even know it existed?!

A mini abdominoplasty – or mini tummy tuck – is an effective option for anyone whose lower abdomen displays poor muscle tone, along with excess skin and fat.

Remember that I also offer the traditional tummy tuck which you can read more about here.

During the mini tummy tuck, some muscular weakness in the lower tummy is addressed, with minimal skin removal and concurrent liposuction of the abdomen and flanks. This results in a scar, which is similar to a caesarean section.

→Who is it for?

The best candidates for this procedure are usually fit and trim women, with a small amount of excess skin and some weakness of the abdominal wall, typically after pregnancy and childbirth.

What is involved in The Mini Tummy Tuck?

To perform a mini-tummy tuck usually takes one to two hours, under general anaesthesia. Patients can usually go home the same day. Recovery is fairly quick and it is usually done as a day procedure.  We often combine the mini tummy tuck with a liposuction of the abdomen

For selected patients it is a great procedure with excellent results. However, each patient is unique and together we shall discuss which procedure is most suitable. The Mini Tummy Tuck is also commonly performed in conjunction with breast or facial surgery.

→Undergoing a Mini Tummy Tuck:

Mini-tummy tuck side effects include temporary swelling, discomfort, and numbness – but you will be given sufficient medication for discomfort.

After a mini-tummy tuck, discomfort at a mild level is normal, and easily controlled with oral pain medication.

→Healing for the Best Results:

Mini-tummy tuck patients will be required to wear a compression garment home for support, and should continue to wear it for about 3 to 4 weeks following surgery.

Mini-tummy tuck recovery time is usually 2 weeks after the procedure.
