Facelift’s – What is Truly Involved?

There are many methods to face-lifting, and advancements in this procedure have evolved significantly over the last ten years. It wasn’t too long ago that surgeons would approach face-lifting by pulling the skin tighter. Unfortunately, this resulted in an unnatural windblown or stretched look. But things have changed and facelift results are highly predictable and consistent nowadays, giving my patients utmost satisfaction.

I will talk through all the possible options during the consultation process based on what your expectations are and what your skin quality will allow.

A facelift is mostly performed to “lift” and remove sagging skin and as a result eliminate some wrinkles while replacing fat pads to their youthful position in the cheeks. Some of the deepest wrinkles may not completely disappear during a facelift but they will be significantly improved.

Technically known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift rejuvenates the mid- to lower face and neck. This procedure may be combined with others:

    • Forehead lift,
    • Facial fat transfers
    • Eyelid surgery or
    • Rhinoplasty or even
    • Botox and Dermal Fillers for maximum results.

The sagging facial structures are “tightened” and the excess skin is removed during a facelift procedure. Tightening these structures eliminates the turkey neck and restores symmetry to the face resulting in a more youthful appearance.

A surgical facelift can lift the whole face or certain areas of the face such as:

  • Eye brow area,
  • Lower face, and
  • The neck.

What is a lower facelift?
A lower facelift is similar to the traditional facelift but focuses entirely on the neck and jawline. The incision is made behind the ears and excess skin is removed from the neck.

Most patients are generally concerned with areas such as the neck and jowls. Sometimes, minor alterations may only require a neck lift. However, when the problem areas are more pronounced, then a neck/cheek or neck/cheek /temple lift will be the best option.

You will need to see me 48 hours post facelift surgery to remove/change the bandages and check the drainage. It is very important to keep these follow-up appointments.

How long does it take to recover from facelift surgery?
Post Facelift surgery bruising and swelling will start to resolve at the end of the first week. Full recovery may take two to three weeks. However, it will be easy to hide bruises fairly easily after seven to ten days with make-up. Ask us about Oxygenetix to help cover surgical and non-surgical redness and bruising.

You shouldn’t need to take anything more than one week’s leave from work to successfully return to the office without anyone noticing you’ve had “work done”

I will remove the stitches from the facelift within 5 to7 days after the procedure and then within two weeks, most swelling should be reduced and you can engage in more normal social activities again.

The honest truth about taking time off work.

Bruising is rather severe after facelift surgery so returning to work and other normal activities is a personal choice but many individuals choose to take up to an 2-3 weeks off work.

Facelift recovery should be straight forward if you follow my instructions.

Did You Know?

The benefit of doing the neck and facelift together is the opportunity to combine neck liposuction to obtain fat for placement elsewhere in the face. This fat can be used to add volume and create symmetry.

Also, know that wrinkles and drooping of the brows and eyes may require specific techniques such as eyelid surgery or brow lift surgery and can be combined with facelift surgery.

Liposuction is often performed during facelifts or neck lifts to remove excess fat from different areas of the face and neck. Oftentimes, fat is removed from under the chin and throughout the neck region.

Facelifts aren’t just for women anymore. A growing number of men wishing to look as young as they feel are opting for facelifts and other plastic surgery procedures.

Should you wish to mimic facelift results I can offer non-surgical techniques that can be completed within an hour. And remember that if you are still concerned with deeper wrinkles, a little Botox and Dermal fillers will fix the problem within minutes. The results will not be a significant as facelift results but can give some indication of what results to expect.
